Buying a new rifle or handgun can be a momentous occasion. Even the process before you take ownership can be rewarding. You get to research different options in-store and online, chat with your favorite gun shop owner and your range buddies, and, eventually, make your selection. But before we get that far, how do you know when it’s time to add a new firearm to your gun safe?
There’s no right or wrong time to pick up a new gun, but there are clues that serve as signs it’s time to bring a new gun into the picture. It could be as simple as wanting to add a striker fired 1911 style pistol to your safe simply because you don’t have one. But what other signs should you look for?
Your Friends Recently Picked Up New Firearms
That old saying “keeping up with the Joneses” is absolutely part of the gun enthusiast’s life. When your friends pick up a new gun, it can be a great opportunity to pick one up yourself. It doesn’t mean you’ll pick up a new firearm every time they get a new gun, but hunting for a new gun can be a great bonding experience.
It can also be beneficial when you have friends taking the lead on getting new guns. This way, once they have their new guns in hand, you can give them a try to see if you like them. Who knows, maybe their brand-new MK12 rifle is exactly what you’ve been looking for, and you just didn’t know it until you fired one for yourself.
You’re Not Spending as Much Time at the Shooting Range
On the topic of the shooting range, if you find yourself skipping out on trips to your local range or you’re not making the time, that can be another sign it's time for a new gun. You may be getting a little bored firing the same guns, so you aren’t heading to the range as much as you should. What you need is a new challenge or something to put through its paces and sharpen your skills with. A new rifle or handgun can reignite your passion for range shooting, so why not use it as an excuse to pick up something new?
There’s a Spot in Your Collection for Something New
Maybe you have space in your gun safe for something completely new. This ties into wanting a new challenge. Many gun safes are home to rifles, shotguns, and pistols. A new type of gun may offer the challenge you’re looking for.
For example, a PCC 9MM feels both familiar and unlike other rifles in your safe. You can find PCCs that have a similar look and feel to AR15 rifles but with significant “under the hood” differences. Plus, getting a new type of firearm can mean you’ll be spending more time at the range getting to know that gun.
