Have you been thinking about assembling an AR-style rifle? It allows you to create the rifle of your dreams, building your own Block 2 M4 clone or other style of rifle with the specific features and parts that feel best to you. By assembling your own, you can easily customize it to your needs. However, not all parts are created equal, and you shouldn’t skimp in some areas. As you start the planning process, here are the six most important components worth a premium.

AR15 Upper Receiver

Lower Receiver

Legally, the lower receiver is the actual gun. It’s where the magazine and trigger live, and it’s also where you start determining the caliber. This will continue with the barrel and upper receiver, but if you are going to make a 308 AR, it starts with accommodating the right magazine. The lower is also where you will install the handle of your choice, as well as the buffer tube and spring.

Upper Receiver

An AR15 upper receiver group often includes the barrel, handguard, and actual upper receiver. The type of material the upper is made from affects the piece's durability. It’s where the bolt rides, so durability is a must. The barrel needs to match the caliber, and you need to decide on the barrel twist. You also need to choose the type of hand guard, from quad rail Picatinny to M-LOK. Other things to consider include the barrel’s length and if you want a drop-in or free-floating handguard.

Trigger

Do you prefer a curved or a straight trigger? This is mostly a matter of personal preference. However, the mechanism of the trigger can affect your shooting. A single-stage trigger will have a much different feel than a two-stage trigger, which can change how a follow-up shot feels. Most experienced shooters already know their preferences, but if you don’t, shoot a few different guns with different trigger systems to get a feel for which you prefer.

Charging Handle

The charging handle can also impact your shooting experience. If you intend to use a suppressor, you will want a charging handle that can handle suppressed fire. The old standard handle can be hard to use, especially if youneed an ambidextrous charging handle. Older charging handles only have one side of the handle and can’t be fanned with your palm, making them much slower to manipulate.

Stock

Not all buttstocks are made equal. The stock is where you place your cheek when firing, and some are far more comfortable than others. Others have too much forward or lateral play, moving every time you take a shot. Plus, the buttpad can impact your overall shooting comfort, which is key if you like to spend hours at the range. Don’t skimp on the stock and you’ll have a better shooting experience.

Muzzle Devices

From flash hiders to compensators, you have a few options for muzzle devices. If you want to use a suppressor, it’s best to get a muzzle device with threads. Otherwise, you have a wide array of different muzzle devices to choose from, many with different effects on how gas is directed from the barrel. Some, for example, work to mitigate muzzle rise, allowing for quicker follow-up shots. Consider what you value most and choose a muzzle device to fit that goal.
