To call the Mark 12 rifle popular would be an understatement. While the standard AR15 has a firm grip on America’s rifle community, the MK12 isn’t far behind. The MK12 is appreciated among civilians, current and former law enforcement, military veterans, and those currently serving their country.

One reason so many people appreciate the MK12 is its military heritage. The variations of the MK12 available on the market today have a direct lineage to many military-style rifles. There are other AR15-style rifles with similar heritages, but the MK12 tends to be one of the more well-known firearms with this background.

Of course, there are plenty of other reasons why so many firearms enthusiasts have at least one MK12 rifle in their gun safe.

The MK12 Has a Longer Barrel

At 18 inches, the MK12 barrel is longer than typical AR15-style rifles. Not only that, this rifle-length barrel can come with a direct impingement gas system and a distinctive MK12 gas block. These features combine to give shooters a higher degree of accuracy—and it can feel satisfying to fire.

Enhanced accuracy is another reason many people gravitate to the MK12 rifle. They want something they can rely on shot after shot at the range, and the MK12 delivers.

The MK12 Is Easy to Modify

You can get a complete MK12 rifle that performs flawlessly out of the box. However, if you’re like most shooters, you probably like to add your personal touches to each firearm. This can include sights, optics, grips, slings, and more. If you’re a modder, you’re in luck because the MK12 is super easy to mod and upgrade right out of the box.

What about parting out an MK12? If you want to build your own, you can do that too! You can start with the MK12 upper receiver group and go from there. Many people take this route because they want a specific MK12 configuration. Some firearms enthusiasts may opt to build their own MK12 based on historical specs or build it based on the most advanced components available on the market.

The MK12 Is Lightweight

The MK12 is relatively lightweight for its size. An MK12 rifle right out of the box can clock in at about 7.5 pounds, give or take. Even with optics attached, you’re still looking at a fairly lightweight rifle, making it easy to carry and maneuver to and from the range or during competition.

A lighter weight means less fatigue for the shooter if they’re firing from a carrying position. Even if the rifle is slung over your shoulder, you won’t miss those extra pounds. Comfort isn’t always top-of-mind when shopping for semi-auto rifles, but it’s definitely a factor worth considering, and the MK12 is hard to beat when it comes to performance and comfort.
